There are many different forms of domestic violence, such as physically, sexually, emotionally, stalking and threatening, there are many other complex types of domestic violence.
Indigenous women are more likely to be victims of domestic violence according to the national crime prevention. Women are the most common victims of domestic violence. Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury or death for women between the age of 15 and 44. Approximately 1500 women are placed into shelters and taken care of every year around the world. A woman is beaten every 15 seconds by her partner or husband which is an incredibly high rate (Uniform Crime Reports). One in every four women will experience some sort of domestic violence in a point of their life. Approximately 1.3 million women fall victim to physical assault by their partner or husband. About 85% of domestic assaults fall upon women. It is generally young and middle aged women that get attacked from domestic violence (aged 15 to 40). Police departments reported that between 40% and 60% of calls the police officers receive at night are about domestic violence around the neighbourhood or victims of domestic violence. The police are more likely to respond within a 5 minute time frame if an offender is a stranger than if an offender is a female victim. Domestic violence occurs across all ages, races, and religious affiliations, occupations and educational backgrounds. Many attackers learned some sort of violent behaviour when they were growing up as a kid in an abusive family.
25% to 45% of women are attacked when they are in a pregnancy. Domestic violence does not usually end when a couple breaks up, over 70% of domestic violence reports are after a couple has split up. Approximately 1 and 12 women and 1 in 45 men have been stalked in some point of their life. One in ten calls about domestic violence is from a child in a household. |
